In KS1 and KS2, our learners access the national curriculum which is delivered through a research-based teaching and learning model.
We teach English using the Talk for Writing approach. This is both inclusive and adaptable to the needs of our learners. We use Little Wandle phonics and reading fluency alongside the PM reading scheme. In Maths, we follow White Rose Maths – ensuring deep understanding of number and mathematical concepts. Our science curriculum is practical, and enquiry based.
Our learners are also taught PE twice a week, with weekly swimming throughout the year. In addition, we offer practical cookery sessions throughout the year to boost confidence and allow our young people to make smarter food choices. Children in each class have a weekly 'Out and About' lesson at our Trinity site or local woodland areas where they learn about the natural world through practical and physical learning. We offer a range of enrichment visits and activities through the year including sailing and angling.
Curriculum Intent
At the Richard Barnes Academy, we have the child at the heart of everything we do. We offer children a fresh start and an opportunity to re-engage with learning in a supportive, inclusive environment. We offer flexible learning and a unique, ambitious curriculum which caters for the individual needs of every child, with a focus on enriching life experiences and social and emotional development. We strive to help our learners become confident, resilient people who aspire to succeed. Through mutual trust, respect, and positive relationships, we hope to instil empathy, compassion, kindness, and place a high value on diversity. This is embedded in all aspects of school life.
